Five Questions to Ask a Prospective Employer
Many people approach an interview without a real understanding of what
they are looking for, and as a result they'll accept a position because
it is offered, not because it is the right position.
Selecting
the wrong employer can have significant impact on personal stress,
future advancement, and attitude. The market typically remains good for
those individuals who are patient and willing to wait for the right
opportunity. Here are some tips on how to determine if the company is a good fit for YOU:
- Can you give me a detailed understanding of what my days might be like? This
question will allow you to actually envision yourself in the role. It's
also good to ask to be shown specifically where your workspace would
be.
- What can you tell me about the people I'll be working with most closely? The
answer can tell you so many things: How good your potential colleagues
really are at their jobs, how much you are likely to learn from them,
and most important, whether the hiring manager is enthusiastic about
his team.
- How would you describe your management style? Never underestimate your boss's "style," the corporate culture, and how you will mesh with both.
- How will we work together to establish objectives and deadlines in the first months of the job? This is a nice way of finding out how much input you will have with your 'could be future boss.'
- How does one succeed or fail at this company? The answer to this question can give you a good sense of the values of the organization and the hiring manager.
