FINDING A JOB IN A RECESSION
(IF YOU BELIEVE THAT)
By: Roger Lear |
Recession or no recession, there are jobs out there. If you start believing every story you read, you will never find a good job. While the unemployment rate is ticking up, we are still creating jobs each and every month. Here are some tips to help you find your next job.
-
DO NOT send your resume to every job on every job board. While this gives the job seeker a feeling they are working hard to find a job, 98% of the applications you will make are worthless. Focus more on targeting your job to your skill sets. Use job boards, networking, friends, conferences and neighbors to help you in your search.
-
Apply your skill sets to the area of the economy that is actually in an upswing. For example, in Orlando, technology, hospitality and healthcare are always looking for great people. (For example, in Insurance companies are always looking for account managers, underwriters, WC claims professionals and CSRs.) Can your skill sets adapt to these companies?
-
Talk with the regional business center for Central Florida(city), (www.orlandoedc.com) and find out what new companies are moving into the area. A lot of time, you can get some great leads for major and minor companies who are looking for employees.
-
Attend as many networking events as you can. Every day, many types of lead groups, networking groups and friends group meet. These are AWESOME for developing leads and letting people know you are looking for a new job. Dont be bashful. In my opinion, this is the best way to find out what is out there!
-
Target companies you want to work for and research their employment websites for work. Believe it or not, not every job is on a job board. Job seekers dont take the time to go to each companys website DIRECTLY to look at opportunities.
-
Be energetic! Smile, have a plan, execute your plan and dont let those around you bring you down. Some company out there needs you and in times like these, you have to be positive and find them.
Pick out your best skill set and plan your job search around it. You are your job search and with some great enthusiasm, you will have a great advantage over your competition. Finally, the internet is full of advice and resources for your job search. If you concentrate your time on the above suggestions, you will be surprised at the outcome. Good luck and email if you have any questions. |

Q: Will the employment situation improve in the coming months?
A: According to Tig Gilliam, CEO of Adecco Group North America, the largest employment staffing firm in the world, there is reason for optimism.
Although the latest report shows employers cut jobs again in April, the losses were not as bad as some economists expected. I still think were going to see 50,000 to 100,000 job losses over the next couple of months. But this is better news than I expected. That we still have 95 percent employment isn't something you'd expect in a recession, especially considering the mortgage crisis, the issues in the financial services and credit industries, and the price shocks in energy. There hasn't been a lot of great economic news lately The jobs market may be the silver lining, states Tig Gilliam.
